With a new baby coming, Kyle loses his special place-- Mother's lap is getting smaller, while Daddy's is ``too hard and bumpy,'' Grandma's ``too soft and squishy,'' and the (male) babysitter, knees akimbo, ``hardly ha[s] a lap at all!'' Even after he's born, baby Matt seems to occupy Mother's lap until she makes a special point of finding a time to welcome Kyle back to his favorite place. The theme is well worn, but the watercolor illustrations here are lively and fresh. Overall, the book is wholesome and appealing and has the added dividend for many collections that the characters are African-Americans. — Kirkus Reviews

From Horn Book Kyle loves his mother's lap, but the baby on the way takes up more and more room until finally there's no lap at all. In a reassuring conclusion, Kyle finds his mother just as eager as he to spend time together. The obvious message is tempered by humorous and realistic details in both the text and in the cheerful illustrations depicting a mostly black cast of characters. — Horn Book
